Here’s a list of 8 things to find joy in and get inspired by. If you’re looking for things to do, something new to try, or you’re working on being more thoughtful about how you spend your time, this is the post for you.
September feels like an inspiring month. For many, it’s the beginning of school, which means new classes, new friends, and new experiences. It’s also the end of summer and the beginning of fall, and this transitional period provides an opportunity to embrace change and look forward to something different.
As a recent graduate feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed, I am trying to figure out my passions, find balance, and embrace the journey. One way I’ve been able to work on this is being thoughtful and aware of what brings me joy, things that I want to try, and things that inspire me. To take it one step further, I write these things down so they feel more concrete and tangible, and so my thoughts are more organized.
This post is meant to inspire you to find things to do, to try new things, and to discover different perspectives. Whether it’s a restaurant, hobby, recipe, film, or brand, there is so much to explore.

2. The Summer I Turned Pretty
I know, I’m late to the party. And I’m sorry, but I did not read the books. But let’s just say, I understand why people are into this show. I was a fan of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, so I had high hopes for this Jenny Han series! While The Summer I Turned Pretty is a completely different vibe and a bit more mature, it still checked the boxes for a romantic, drama-filled, coming-of-age, binge-able show. Now I won’t lie, many parts of it were certainly cringe and frustrating. But something about the show and plot really pulls you in. You’ll find yourself talking to the screen, choosing sides, and feeling emotional. Not to mention, I always appreciate Asian representation, and I feel like there’s a pretty good balance of visibility, without it feeling too forced. If you haven’t watched this show yet, give it a try. And as of the end of season two, I am team Conrad!
3. Oama Fishing
I recently went Oama fishing and it was the best fishing experience of my life! Not that I’ve had extensive fishing experience… but I had a really good time. For those who don’t know, oama is the Hawaiian name for the juvenile goatfish. In other words, it’s a small silver fish with some yellow coloring. You use a short pole, small hook, net, and you often find them in shallow waters. I went on the east side of Oahu to a fairly secluded area and it was perfect! The water was clear and calm and we could see all the fish swimming around us. The oamas happened to be biting super well that day, to the point where we were catching some without any bait! Let’s just say going fishing is extra fun when you actually catch fish… and this type of fishing is also easy because you can just stand there with simple equipment. I am no fisher-woman by any means, but if you’re looking for a fun, outdoor activity, try this! Or go out shore fish – bring friends, snacks, and music, and enjoy the outdoors.

5. @bakedbymelissa‘s TikTok Videos
We all have heard of Baked by Melissa, right? The mini cupcakes and sweet treats… To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever actually tried them. But, this TikTok account continues to show up on my feed, and I’m not mad about it. Now, this account is not selling you Baked by Melissa goods. First of all, Melissa is relatable and funny and down to earth; her videos are easy to watch and straight to the point. Second, Melissa does NOT only make cupcakes. I repeat! Melissa does not only make cupcakes. In fact, I haven’t yet come across a video where she makes cupcakes. She makes vibrant salads and sandwiches, concocts creative, healthy treats, and scoops vanilla bean paste out of a gallon container! If you’re looking for some unique, healthy food/recipe inspiration, look no further.
Here is the vanilla bean paste she uses… definitely pricey, but maybe worth it?
6. Only Murders in the Building
I’ll be honest, it took me a little while to get into this show. The dynamic with two old guys and Selena Gomez is… unexpected. But, they make it work, and I love a murder mystery. They can really gets your wheels turning! While nothing will beat Selena Gomez as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, it’s nice to see her on screen again. Although she is ultra-famous, I feel like I haven’t seen her in a series in a while. Not to mention, she’s alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short! Anyway, this show is full of Millenial-Gen Z-dynamic humor, diverse personalities, deep backstories, and intriguing mystery. If you’re looking for a new show to binge, try this one! Or perhaps you’ll get inspired and host a murder mystery night with your friends.
7. Women’s College Volleyball
Being a former collegiate volleyball player, I have a special place for women’s college volleyball. While viewership is growing, women’s volleyball (and women’s sports in general) could always use more attention. That’s why it was so awesome to see Nebraska Volleyball beat the world record (!!) for attendance at a women’s sporting event when they played in their school’s football stadium. I repeat, football stadium?! How crazy is that – I can’t imagine playing in a football stadium, let alone in front of over 92,000 fans. Anyway, September marks the beginning of women’s college volleyball season and I just love to see how talented these girls are. It makes it even more fun because I played with and against a handful of the girls still playing on Division I teams, so it’s exciting to follow their seasons. Like guys tend to follow the NFL and college football and know all about the athletes, I enjoy learning about specific teams and players. Volleyball is truly a fun sport to watch, even if you know practically nothing about it. Support women’s sports and give volleyball a try! Or, maybe this will inspire you to try a new sport or get active.
8. Old Music
I have always loved old music and have considered myself somewhat of an “old soul.” By old music, I mean 70’s and 80’s – Elton John, Carpenters, England Dan & John Ford Coley, ABBA, Bee Gees… I cannot stress enough how wonderful this era of music was. The general sound of this era is so distinct, yet very diverse. I often get in a rut of not knowing what to listen to, but I truly can always count on my oldies. The vibes are certainly different from today’s pop and rap, but it’s feel-good and soulful and oh-so singable. I highly encourage you to listen to these artist and feel all the nostalgic feels. But if not, find new music or try a new genre!
Get Inspired!
I know, this list is random and included everything from activities and music to influencers and sports. But that’s really the point of this series! There are so many things to find joy and inspiration in. Hopefully this post gave you some ideas of new things to try or sparked some interest in something different. Get out there and get inspired!
